1. The Revenant

Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter
Genre: Adventure, Drama, Thriller
Sweeping the highest number of nominations this Oscars, The Revenant is the hottest favorite of 2016 – in no small part, thanks to Leonardo DiCaprio’s dazzling performance in this one.
2. Mad Max: Fury Road
Director: George Miller
Stars: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult
Genre: Adventure, Action, Sci-Fi
Another hot favorite for Best Picture, and also starring Tom Hardy, Mad Max: Fury Road is neck-and-neck with The Revenant, having been nominated for all the same categories with its competitor. Regardless which wins between them, Tom Hardy would be happy.
3. The Martian
Director: Ridley Scott
Stars: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig
Genre: Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi
Nominated for Best Picture, as well as Actor in a Leading Role for Matt Damon, The Martian was adapted from a novel of the same name. This adaptation is also a hopeful in the Writing (Adapted Screenplay) category.
4. Carol
Director: Todd Haynes
Stars: Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson
Genre: Drama, Romance
With the two stars of the show both nominated for Best Actress in their respective categories, Carol is also in the running for the category of Writing (Adapted Screenplay). This film was actually adapted from the 1952 romance novel – The Price of Salt – and is considered to be amongst the first of its kind, in its time, in discussing themes of homosexuality.
5. Bridge of Spies

Stars: Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Alan Alda
Genre: Biography, Drama, Thriller
A nominee for Writing (Original Screenplay), Bridge of Spies is set in the time of the Cold War when an American lawyer is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy.
6. Spotlight
Director: Tom McCarthy
Stars: Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams
Genre: Biography, Drama, History
Spotlight revisits, with truthfulness and authenticity, how the Boston Globe exposed the epic scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Church. Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams’ performances in this film earned them nominations in their respective categories – Actor and Actress in a Supporting Role.
7. The Big Short

Stars: Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling
Genre: Biography, Drama
Christian Bale’s performance as an eccentric hedge fund manager earned him a nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. See how this quadruplet beat the system during the credit and housing bubble that happened a decade ago.

9. The Danish Girl

Critically acclaimed for their performances, both Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander earned themselves nominations in their respective categories – Actor in a Leading Role and Actress in a Supporting Role. The Danish Girl explores the unprecedented concept of transgender in their time.
10. Brooklyn

Stars: Saoirse Ronan, Emory Cohen, Domhnall Gleeson
Genre: Drama, Romance
Picking up three nominations, Brooklyn follows the life of an Irish immigrant who lands in Brooklyn and finds herself falling in love with a local. But between her past and her present, she has some difficult decisions to make.
